Why/How Martial Arts is DIFFERENT Than other sports?

In last nights teen class - I enlisted Andrew Mac - a bright young man in our North Andover location - to help me identify why martial arts is different than other sports - Andrew aslo plays basketball and tennis in additon to attending Cervizzi's, and here is what we came up with:
*Karate is an individual sport - and an individual effort - there is no team , so to speak, to let down or carry
*It is non competitive - you just compete with yourself
*The movements improve your other sports by developing a keen sense of eye hand coordination & footwork, increasing speed and agility too - just to name a few .
*You are always learning and gaining new knowledge - once you learn the rules of a basketball game you play to the best of your ability  - not really learning anything going forward -
*You move up in rank -no ranks in basketball or baseball.
*Prevents bullying - by building the self confidence of students to walk away or not feel the need to be a bully -
*You feel important and powerful at the end of each class.
*Builds self esteem - no fear of failure in letting team down.
*Makes it easier to make firends and talk to people - the excercises and drills we do, develop that
*Helps with presentations at schools - no fear in standing in front pf a goup of people
*It allows for improvisation - you can adjust your technique based on what is in front of you and adapt  - There is no one way to do anyting  - it is fits everyone.
*You can set goals for yourself  - ie getting next rank  - If you want to achieve next rank quicker - get to class more often and learn -
*Develops leadership skills  - and how to listen to people and make right decisions.

These are just a few!  I would like to thank Andrew for collaborating wihtme and giving me these great points and we felt we needed to share this - Believe it or not - A LOT of peopel are not aware of these benefits and consider martial arts a "sport"  we do not - At Cervizzi's these are LIfe skills - not something you do in a season - but for the rest of your life!

That is excellent!!! Thank you for sharing this point of view - we DO forget how others view our study. It is very fulfilling being in the presence when someone 'gets it' and see it more than a sport or activity.
